Twelve-speed drivetrains have become the practical standard for gravel because they combine a wide gear range with the simplicity of not having to think about a front derailleur. The Meihanda range includes three gravel platforms available with 12-speed drivetrains, including electronic shifting.

Why 12-speed suits gravel
Gravel puts two contradictory demands on a drivetrain. On the road you want closely spaced gears so you can hold a steady cadence; on a loose climb you want a gear low enough to keep the rear wheel from spinning. A 12-speed single-ring setup gets closer to satisfying both than an 11-speed one, because the extra sprocket buys range without giving up the spacing in the middle where you spend most of your time.
- One chainring means one shifter and one thing to go wrong, not two
- Wider total range without a road double’s overlap
- Better chain retention on rough surfaces than a front derailleur setup
- Fewer dropped chains, which matters more on gravel than on tarmac
Mechanical or electronic 12-speed?
Mechanical 12-speed shifting is lighter on the wallet and needs nothing but a cable and a barrel adjuster to keep working. Electronic shifting removes cable stretch from the equation and gives consistent shifts under load, but it adds battery management to your routine.
| Consideration | Mechanical 12-speed | Electronic 12-speed |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Maintenance | Cable and housing replacement | Charge the battery, update firmware |
| Shift quality under load | Good | More consistent |
| Failure mode | Cable stretch — gradual, fixable anywhere | Battery — sudden, needs charging |
| Best for | Riders who service their own bikes | Riders who want consistency and are happy to charge |
Both are available on Meihanda gravel platforms, so the choice is yours rather than the factory’s.
Frequently asked questions
Is 12-speed better than 11-speed?
Not automatically, but it is easier to get the gear range you want without a front derailleur. If your 11-speed setup already covers the climbs you ride, there is no urgent reason to change.
Which Meihanda gravel bikes offer 12-speed?
The Phantom Series, the Phantom P10 / P12 platform and the Lucky carbon platform all list 12-speed builds. Exact availability varies by colour and build option.
Does 12-speed need a special chain or cassette?
Yes — the drivetrain is a matched system. When replacing parts, buy chain and cassette to the same speed count. Tell us your build and we will confirm what fits.
Can I get a 12-speed build with a custom specification?
Yes. OEM/ODM orders support custom component specification on the same platforms.
