Hardtail, soft-tail or full suspension

A hardtail has a rigid rear triangle and a suspension fork at the front. It is lighter, simpler and cheaper, and on smooth-to-moderate trails it is faster than a heavier full-suspension bike. A soft-tail carries a rear suspension element without a full linkage, which takes the edge off trail chatter at less weight than a long-travel design. Full suspension adds travel and control on genuinely rough descents, at the cost of weight and maintenance.

  • Hardtail — best value, lowest weight, easiest to maintain; suits flowy trails and XC
  • Soft-tail — a middle step that adds rear compliance without a heavy linkage
  • Full suspension — more control on steep, rough descents; more to maintain

Wheel size: 27.5 or 29 inch

Twenty-nine-inch wheels roll over roots and rocks more easily and hold speed better, which is why they dominate cross-country and trail riding. Twenty-seven-and-a-half-inch wheels are more agile and quicker to turn, which suits tighter trails and smaller riders. Some Meihanda models are offered with a choice of both.

Consideration 27.5 inch 29 inch
Rollover Less Better
Agility Quicker to turn Slower to change direction
Momentum Lower Holds speed better
Suits Tight trails, smaller riders XC, trail, taller riders

Choosing between mechanical and electric mountain bikes

An electric mountain bike adds motor assistance on climbs and extends how far you can ride in a session. It also adds weight and a battery to manage. If your local climbs are what stops you riding more, assistance changes the equation; if you are already comfortable on the terrain you ride, a lighter mechanical bike will feel more direct.

Meihanda builds both, and the electric models are available with custom battery, motor and component specification on OEM/ODM orders.

Frequently asked questions

What is a soft-tail mountain bike?

A soft-tail frame carries a rear suspension element without a full linkage design — enough to take the edge off trail chatter without the weight and complexity of long-travel full suspension. Ask us for the travel figures on a specific build before ordering.

27.5 or 29 inch wheels?

Twenty-nine for rollover and speed, 27.5 for agility and tighter trails. Some of our models are offered in both, so the choice is yours.

How much should I spend on a first mountain bike?

The entry-level hardtail in our range starts at US$359. Spending more buys lighter components and a better fork rather than a fundamentally different bike at that level.

Are the electric mountain bikes trail legal?

Electric bike rules vary by country, state and even individual trail network. Check your local land manager before riding anywhere non-motorised, and tell us your market when ordering OEM/ODM so we can supply an appropriate specification.

Can I order a custom battery and motor specification?

Yes. OEM/ODM orders support custom battery, motor and component specification. Send us your target market and required range and we will quote to that specification.
