Import duty on bicycles is not one number, and for Chinese-origin frames it is rarely the tariff that matters most. This table puts the tariff, the trade-remedy layer and the consumption tax side by side for ten markets.
The table
| Market | Tariff | Trade remedy | VAT / GST | Effective at import |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| European Union | 14% | 48.5% AD | 19–27% | 62.5% + VAT |
| United States | 5.5% or 11% | +25% and +12.5%* | — | 43–48.5% |
| United Kingdom | 14% | Verify | 20% | 14%+ + VAT |
| Canada | 6.5% | — | 5% GST | 11.5% + provincial |
| Australia | 5% | Verify | 10% GST | 15%+ |
| New Zealand | 5% | — | 15% GST | 20% |
| Japan | 0% | — | 10% | 10% |
| South Korea | 8% | — | 10% | 18% |
| Singapore | 0% | — | 9% GST | 9% |
| UAE | 5% | — | 5% | 10% |
| Switzerland | 0% | — | 8.1% | 8.1% |
*US: 5.5% applies to adult bicycles under HTS 8712.00.25, 11% to smaller-wheel bicycles under 8712.00.15; Section 301 adds 25%, and a 12.5% forced-labour tier was added on 24 July 2026. Rates have changed twice since November 2025 — verify before pricing.
Three things this table makes obvious
Bicycle Import Duty by Country, October 2026 — compiled by Meihanda. EU: Reg. (EU) 2025/2146. US: HTS 8712 with Section 301 (List 1) and the 12.5% forced-labour tier effective 24 July 2026. Reference only, not customs advice. Reuse with attribution and a link to meihanda.com/import-duty-by-country.
A worked example: 200 bikes to Rotterdam
Abstract duty rates do not convince anyone. Take a real shipment — 200 complete bikes at US$1,000 FOB each, US$3,000 of sea freight, into Rotterdam:
| Line | Netherlands (EU) | United States | Japan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goods value (FOB) | $200,000 | $200,000 | $200,000 |
| Freight | $3,000 | $3,000 | $3,000 |
| CIF value (duty base) | $203,000 | $203,000 | $203,000 |
| Tariff | $28,420 (14%) | $11,165 (5.5%) | $0 |
| Trade remedy | $98,455 (48.5%) | $76,125 (37.5%) | $0 |
| Landed, before VAT | $329,875 | $290,290 | $203,000 |
| Per unit | $1,649 | $1,451 | $1,015 |
| On top of FOB | +65% | +45% | +1.5% |
| VAT / GST (usually recoverable) | $69,274 (21%) | — | $20,300 (10%) |
Three mistakes that cost real money
How to use this table
Start from the on top of FOB row and price backwards. If a $1,000 bike needs to retail at $2,000 and lands at $1,649 in Rotterdam, there is $351 left for payment fees, marketing, warranty and margin — which is not enough. Change the market, change the frame, or change the price point; those are the only three levers that move.
