A gravel bike is the bike most people should have bought first. It takes wide, comfortable tyres. It goes almost anywhere a road bike goes, and most places a mountain bike goes. It is not a compromise so much as a widened brief — and that is exactly why choosing one is confusing: every brand draws the line between “road” and “mountain” somewhere different.
This guide walks through the five decisions that actually determine whether you will love a gravel bike — tyre clearance, gearing, brakes, frame material and fit — plus how to tell gravel apart from a mountain bike when the marketing blurs it. The short answer
Buy for the surfaces you actually ride. If you ride mostly pavement with occasional dirt, you want 700C × 35–40C tyres and an all-round aluminium frame. If you ride rough gravel, loaded tours or singletrack, prioritise tyre clearance, hydraulic disc brakes and a wide-range 1× drivetrain. Frame material matters far less than fit and tyre clearance — carbon is a nice-to-have, not a requirement.

1. What Actually Makes a Bike “Gravel”
There is no single standard, but four features separate a real gravel bike from a road bike with wider tyres:

If a bike is missing hydraulic disc brakes and real tyre clearance, it is a road bike — however it is labelled.
2. Tyre Width and Clearance: The Decision That Shapes Everything
Tyre width is the single biggest factor in how a gravel bike feels. Wider tyres at lower pressure absorb chatter, float over loose gravel and — counter-intuitively — are often faster on rough surfaces because they stop you bouncing.

Check clearance, not just the fitted tyre. A frame sold with 40C tyres may only accept 45C — and muddy conditions need clearance beyond the tyre size. Buy a frame with a little more room than your intended tyre.
3. Gearing: 1× or 2×

A 42T single chainring with an 11-42T cassette covers everything from steep loose climbs to fast descents for most riders. That is exactly the configuration we build on the Phantom 100 and Phantom 500, stepping up to a wider 11-46T or 11-50T cassette on the 12-speed Phantom 700.
4. Brakes and Frame Material
Brakes: hydraulic disc, non-negotiable
On gravel you brake in mud, on loose descents and in the wet — conditions where rim brakes lose most of their power. Hydraulic disc brakes give consistent, low-effort stopping and clear the rim so you can run wide tyres and a mudguard. Every bike in our Phantom range uses hydraulic discs matched to its groupset tier.

A cost-effective combination many riders overlook: an aluminium frame with a carbon fork. It removes weight and vibration where it matters most, for far less than a full carbon frame — which is the exact setup we use across the Phantom range (aluminium gravel frame, T800 carbon fibre fork).
5. Gravel Bike vs Mountain Bike
This is the question buyers get stuck on, and the answer is simpler than the marketing suggests.

Rule of thumb: if your terrain is mostly rideable but rough, and you value covering distance, buy gravel. If your terrain is genuinely technical — roots, drops, rock gardens — buy a mountain bike. Gravel bikes are efficient, not magic; no 40C tyre makes a rock garden comfortable.
6. Sizing and Fit
Gravel sizing sits close to road sizing, but riders often go one size down for a more upright, stable position. The practical approach:
- Use height as a starting point — our Phantom range covers S / M / L across roughly 160–185 cm.
- Check standover clearance — you want room to put a foot down on uneven ground.
- Account for the flared drop bar — flare widens the effective bar width and increases control off-road; don’t over-size the frame to compensate.
- Fine-tune with stem and seatpost, not the frame. A bike within a size of correct can be fitted; the wrong size cannot.

The jump from “under $700” to “$700–1,000” is where gravel bikes stop being road bikes with fat tyres: that is where you get hydraulic brakes, thru-axles and proper tyre clearance. It is the upgrade worth paying for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a gravel bike good for beginners?
Yes — arguably better than a road bike. The wider tyres, upright-ish position and hydraulic disc brakes make it more forgiving, and it handles the broken pavement and dirt paths that put beginners off road bikes. You give up a little top-end speed and gain a lot of versatility.
What tyre width should a gravel bike have?
40–42C suits most riders on mixed pavement and gravel. Go 35–38C if you ride mostly tarmac, or 45–50C for rough gravel, bikepacking and singletrack. Always check the frame’s maximum clearance, not just the tyre it ships with.
Can I use a gravel bike as a road bike?
Yes. Fit 32–35C slick or semi-slick tyres and it becomes a comfortable endurance road bike. It will be marginally slower than a dedicated road bike at the top end, but more comfortable and far more versatile.
Gravel bike or mountain bike for commuting?
Gravel, for most commutes. It is lighter and faster on pavement, rolls over kerbs and rough patches easily, and takes mudguards and a rack. Choose a mountain bike only if your route includes genuine technical off-road sections.
Do I need a carbon frame for gravel?
No. Aluminium gravel frames are durable and cost far less, and a carbon fork on an aluminium frame captures most of the comfort and weight benefit for a fraction of the price. That is the combination we build across the Phantom range.
How much should a first gravel bike cost?
